There is a vigorous discussion on the future of work – what we will do, how and where we will do it. The cubicle office was discredited in favor of the open plan. Then open plan critics cried that we need more privacy. We are behind the “micro-urban” model, where the workplace offers a varied topography of scales, sounds, light, and work modalities. It is intended for a small group – a team within a larger company or a startup or an ad hoc collaboration. Communal functions are broken out of our program and staged as islands within a sea of varied individual and collaborative work environments. These pavilions are sited to optimize their program while designed to have a distinct materiality and feel. Workstations take into account the requisite for a variety of tailor made work surfaces that do not inhibit the evolution of collaboration or the ergonomic needs of the individual. The range of spaces reflects the new way we work today, in village-like, community-oriented spaces. The surfaces of these spaces are activated with technology. Large communal tables provide basic workspace, but supporting spaces enable working in different ways — quiet or social, sitting or standing. This is an environment animated in constant flux and built to foster creative collaboration.
