Build a Better Burb is an urban design competition for Long Island sponsored by the Long Island Index. We designed the site to evoke the horizontality of Long Island while remaining simple to use. The site is simple in appearance but is functionally sophisticated. We built a content-management system to administer the text and graphics, a full submission module to receive competition entries and store them in a database, a gallery to display the entries separately to the judges and later to the public, a voting module for the peoples choice competition, and a set of mode switches to determine what components of the site appear as the competition phases elapse. The site is built on the Ruby on Rails framework.
